Throw Out Your Resolution List: A Gentle Approach to the New Year

modernmonklife-new-year-resolutions

As we enter a new year, there is this incredible energy flowing through the air. It is a time where people set their goals, dreams, and action plans and just plain get moving. It’s a time to “ride the energy wave” to make changes, improvements, and as always, awaken.

When we are surfing the web, almost every article seen is geared toward resolutions. “New Year, New You,” “Out with the Old and in with the New,” and “Apps That Help You Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions.” Interestingly enough, even with all this support and content flowing through our lives every January, many of our resolutions don’t make it past April. Why? Because we are setting ourselves up to fail.

The Perpetual Downfall

I will quit smoking.

I will lose 20 pounds.

I will make more money.

I will eat healthy.

While these resolutions may be great for you, they are not creative enough. When you form creative and visionary steps, you begin to get excited about your resolutions, and once excited, you are drawn to taking action in your progression. It is far easier to achieve your resolutions if you are drawn to them rather than having to push yourself to complete them.

Shift from Change to Progress

Change is inevitable. Life is continuously changing for everyone in many different ways. When we experience progress, on the other hand, we are ignited from within. The steps we must take to reach our soul’s calling will happen naturally, without much effort. Get rid of the idea that you want to make changes. Of course you do! Shift your vocabulary to growth, and small steps will reveal themselves that will place you right on the corner of growth and progress.

Baby Steps

I found out in my own journey that when I made small progressive steps toward creating visions, major achievements happened! For example, when I took the step to experience life as an observer, becoming aware of myself and those around me, insights came forth and the creative wheels started churning. This small step led me to sit down and begin writing, a passion I had yet to discover and ultimately part of my growth process.

This is not to say that you can’t dream big or that you can’t reach your goals on your own. Rather, I am proposing that you take a close examination of your goals, strip them to their core, and find those desires that will really knock your socks off. Then create a vision and establish small steps that give you the “pull” rather than the need to push toward them. Get so excited about your visions that you just can’t wait to do it. That being said, get creative, pull out your vision board, and make it a compelling vision.

Happy New Year! This year will be an exciting and revolutionary time for us all.
