The Holidays are in full swing and so are your hangovers but that doesn’t mean you have to throw away your diet completely just because you have a few extra social events scheduled. I’m keeping it simple for this post and giving you the top 5 ways for keeping your kick-ass, high Alkaline, veggie eating, juice drinking, eating habits from going down the potty. I asked a few friends who love to party (and juice) on their best practices and here’s what we came up with.
- Stuff your face before arriving: If you eat a good nutritious meal before any event, you are less likely to make bad food decisions. You’ll end up eating much smaller portions or politely passing on the heavy stuff while sticking to the lighter fares.
- Add ice to your wine: Wine connoisseurs may get their you-know-what in a wad for this one but let me explain…My good friend in St Tropez says he is constantly invited to events during the summer but naturally (since he is in the service business) he is super busy and can’t keep up with all the social events. Since passing on Rose while in St. Tropez is ludicrous, he adds ice cubes to his glass. This allows him to drink less and stay hydrated. While in Spain, I was adding a little seltzer water to my red wine. “Vino Rojo con gas, por favor?”
- Drink Water and let your phone remind you: There are tons of apps that are H2O reminders. Download, set the parameters, and let your phone remind you to chug some water in between drinks. This is also helpful for increasing your water intake throughout the day as well. I like “Water Reminder and Tracker”.
- Eat Clean: It’s an obvious one but the cleaner and lighter your food is on a normal basis, the more likely you are to stick with those kinds of foods while out. When you have natural energy and a body thriving on good foods, temptation is reduced, food choices become clearer and you can gladly pass without having to fight your inner food devil.
- Keep it classy: More expensive liquors have fewer congeners (substances produced during fermentation and may cause hangovers). Drink top-shelf alcohol or the light clear drinks to potentially reduce hangovers which lead to overeating greasy nosh. Then sip slowly: Keep your glass in your hand longer by sipping slowly. Sometimes it’s just a physiological matter. With your hand always occupied, people are less likely to continue to ask you, “would you like another one?”.
Lastly, be safe! Being the designated driver is a sure way to avoid the toxic effects of drinking and keeps you and your family safe on the road.
